The Town of Hartney and the RM of Cameron

The Town of Hartney is located on a main rail line in the Westman Region of the Province of Manitoba. Over the years, it has become known as the “Little town with a lot of heart”. With a strong agricultural history and nestled along the picturesque Souris River, this community of 400 has grown to become a major economic and service hub for the area.

As residents know, the town is a great place to live, work and play. Recreation has always played a significant role in the community. Hartney and the RM of Cameron host year round activities for people of all ages. There are many winter activities to participate in as the community boasts a brand new Hockey Arena and Curling Rink. Its proximity to the Lauder Sandhills provides easy access to cross-country ski, snowshoe, and snowmobile trails. In the summer, residents enjoy the modern swimming pool, a 9 hole golf course, baseball/softball diamonds and numerous canoeing and kayaking opportunities on the Souris River.

Hartney is home to Hartney School, a Kindergarten to Grade 12 facility with more than 140 students and 13 teaching staff. The student-to-teacher ratio is approximately 14 to 1. Technology is an important focus in the facility. Each of the classrooms is equipped with a SmartBoard or a Mimio and there is a Computer Lab with 24 Apple computers. The school utilizes an IITV (Interactive Instructional Television) system enabling staff to broadcast courses to students in other communities and receive courses from other schools.

Extra-curricular programs have always had a high priority in the school and community. Students have the opportunity to participate in volleyball, football, rugby, hockey, girls fastball, boys baseball, golf, badminton, and curling. A number of clubs such as the travel club, yearbook, book club, and scrapbooking club operate in the school and students are invited to join. Hartney School also offers a full band program from Grade 5 to Grade 12. As well, students have the opportunity to participate in the Jazz Band program. Students attend several band festivals during the year and look forward to the Annual Band tour.

Hartney School students are active in both the High School Apprenticeship Option Program and the Career and Technology Studies Program. Each of these programs provides students with the chance to experience the various careers including trades opportunities available in the region.

This friendly and safe community provides people with a wide array of opportunities and amenities. Come and stay with us… A little town with a lot of heart.
