Melita and Melita School

PDF Print E-mail

Melita is a booming community located in the Southwestern corner of Manitoba.  Melita is surrounded by rich agricultural land and is known for producing high quality grain and livestock.  It is also an area rich in natural gas and oil.  The current oil boom has created many new jobs and helped boost the local economy.

Melita boasts a wonderful array of recreation, tourism, arts and culture.  In the summer, the town is a hot spot!  Stay active at the 9 hole golf course, the baseball diamonds, the fabulous new swimming pool and great parks and walking trails.  There are many historic sites and museums to visit as well. As the seasons turn to winter, so do the recreation activities.  There are indoor and outdoor skating rinks, curling clubs, a bowling alley, and snowmobile and cross-country ski trails.
Throughout the year, there are many activities to keep everyone busy.  Residents get involved in community drama productions, dance classes, gymnastics, karate, skating and swimming lessons, community fall suppers and pancake breakfasts and youth groups such as air cadets and 4-H.  Of course, this is only a short list of the many things to do!

Melita School is a K-12 school.  Principal Sandra Clark and her staff are always looking for ways to add excitement to the curriculum.  Just this spring, Melita School opened an “Electro-Lab” brought about as a partnership between the school, the parent advisory group and local businesses.  In the lab, students have the opportunity to do hands on learning with projects such as Vinyl Sign Making, GPS, Engineering structures, Home Maintenance and Plastics.  Students spend about 10 days working on each unit to gain the skills needed to complete the assigned tasks.  This project is indeed a good way for students to test out skills that may assist them in choosing careers in the future. There are plans to expand the course to include topics such as Housing, Interiors and Furnishings, Small Engines, Culinary Arts and Electronics.

As well as the core academic courses, Melita School also offers a variety of optional courses such as Band, Vocational Trades Programs and French on campus and an even wider variety of courses through the Southwest Horizon School Division online campus.  The online campus allows several schools to offer courses that would not otherwise be available to their students because of small class sizes.  A teacher leads the interactive class through IITV and teaches students from several schools at the same time.  Students can ask questions and have them answered by the teacher in real time.  Some courses offered in this way are 3D modeling, Web Design, Digital Photography and Economics.

Congratulations to the staff for finding innovative ways to make education accessible to all students.
